The Sound Space gets noticed!

The Sound Space held its workshops on the 8th and 9th of October at Chowpatty and Bandra. We had a great turnout and some brilliant feedback. Amongst the many news paper writeups we got.. Here’s a good one in the Bombay Times!

Chanting – How it works.

So you’re watching your grandmom chant and you’re thinking… Does this really work?

You’d be surprised.

Compare your body to an orchestra. All the musicians have their own instrument and their own music to play. Similarly, every bone, organ, tissue and other part of the body is believed to give off a specific vibration. When the body is in good health, there is a complete synchronization and it is like a wonderful orchestra playing a beautiful piece. However, sometimes there is a part of the body that becomes out of alignment and begins to vibrate differently. This is what we perceive as bad health or disease – Something like an orchestra going all wrong! The human voice is our own sound instrument which we can use as a tool to bring back the vibration in alignment.

So how does this work?

On a purely physical level, the palate and the human ear function as a blue print for the body’s nervous system. You probably are familiar with the concept of hand and foot reflexology where the body can be manipulated using pressure points. Now imagine your palate having similar points! Its true.. There are altogether 82 reflex points on the palate which are stimulated by different tongue positions and send energy to dormant parts of the body.

Sanskrit chanting is said to have direct health benefits as the tongue positions in these mantras stimulate the pituitary gland – the master gland which is linked to one’s immunity and sexuality and the vagus nerve, which is the single most important nerve in the body. This nerve passes through the neck and affects the heart, the lungs, intestines and intestinal tract and back muscles.

Chanting also affects our breathing and causes deep respiration, thus a significant amount of this emotional toxicity can be released from the body, which is why people enjoy it so much.

On a  deeper level, for thousands of years, music has been regarded as possessing unique powers in affecting the human experience. The concept of a repetitive beat seems to aid in the achievement of meditative state. Shamans are well known for their use of drum beats to access healing powers both within themselves and for the people they wish to treat.

It is that in the meditative state, the two hemispheres of the brain become synchronized in brain wave production. It would then make sense that the repetitive nature of chant, and the underlying beat of music, is central in the unifying and rhythmic effect that such practices have on the brain.

The Aum sound is also an important tone in traditional chanting practice which calls upon repetition and harmonics for its restorative effects.

More on Aum and its effects later!

Till then stay postive, stay “sound” ;)

The Sound Space – The Beginning

The Sound Space started off as an experiment. A venture to categorize, or rather, put  a label on the various powers of sound and its effect on people.

Explaining the concept to anyone was difficult. But between the two sisters, there wasn’t much explaining necessary. Kamakshi always knew what she wanted. She wanted to use her music for the betterment of society. The inspiration to this thought was given to her by her father, Harendra Khurana, who has been researching music and healing for 35 years now!!! However, the direction was given to her by her mother.. Rajni Khurana – Tarot and Sound Therapist, and might I say – her sister Vishala.

Now the question really is- “What exactly does The Sound Space do?”

To put it down simply, The Sound Space uses sound in all its capacities to heal. Needless to say, sound has been proven to have various qualities – from coordination and inspiration to healing. There are various categories which use these different aspects of sound through various mediums. For instance, in our module entitled “Sound for Better Concentration”, we have used the power of sound to enhance focus. How does music help to enhance concentration you might wonder?

The attention span of people today are reducing rapidly with the increase of stimuli around us.  Many people believe that music enhances productivity?  And if it does, then what kind of music enhances and what kind comes in the way of concentration and productivity? It has been proven that music can be used to affect moods. Is there, then a kind of music that can put you in a “productive mood”?

This workshop deals with all these issues and more. Sound affects the coordination of the left and right side of the brain. The left side of the brain deals with mathematics and logistics. The right deals with language and perception. Different kinds of music enhance the working of the different sides of the brain. For instance, percussion enhances the working of the left side of brain, where as soft rock or classical music works on the right side of the brain. So all you students who enjoy listening to music while you solve math problems – the good news is.. it actually works!

The various exercises taught in this workshop work towards gaining back our attention in a short span of time.Using sound based methods such a humming and acapella, we combine the effects of brain gym and sound to create capsule exercises to instantly increase your focus!

We cover many aspects of sound in the other workshops. So keep reading for more information :)

In the meantime-stay positive, stay “sound” ;)
